Hi folks,
we sell a lot of Fenix torches to Mountain bike enthusiasts and receive lots of enquiries asking us which Fenix torch is most suited to night time riding.
What we've learned by talking with MTB enthusiasts is that a lightweight and powerful light with a built in power supply is needed for both bar and / or helmet mounting. The light needs to have a powerful output combined with excellent run time to minimize battery changes. It also needs to provide this performance using rechargeable batteries to minimize running costs.
POWER AND DURATION AT MAXIMUM OUTPUT
Whilst the Fenix P3D Q5 and TK10 torches offer 215 - 225 lumens they rely on CR 123 lithium batteries for power. Rechargeables are of course a requirement for regular use but RCR rechargeable CR 123 batteries offer somewhat limited capacity. Typical run times at Max output with rechargeable batteries in the P3D and TK10 are around 45 minutes.
Longer runtime at maximum output is needed and this leads us to the Fenix L2D Q5. This light uses regular AA batteries. Output drops a little to 180 lumens. However, feed this torch with 2700 mah Ni - Mh AA rechargeable batteries and they'll happily power the light at maximum output, in full regulation (non dimming) for over two hours on a single pair of batteries! A pair of these lights provide over 300 lumens between them and with one on your bars & one on your helmet you'll never be short of light.
The L2D Q5 will give you excellent power, incredible duration and no trailing cables to tuck away. What's more when you're not using them on your MTB you have a fantastic 2 x AA torch for general use.

NEW RECOMMENDATION - 06 / 07 / 08 Fenix TK11 !
The new Fenix TK11 is a brand new TPS recommendation for a bike light. We didn't recommend the excellent and very similar TK10 for MTB or commuting simply because with constant use CR123 primary batteries would be a very expensive way to feed a bike light and rechargeable 123's offered only a max of around 55 minutes runtime with the very best batteries. Well, we'll happily recommend this light ! The Fenix TK11 features a new circuit and a bored out body tube so you can run it on either 2 x CR123 batteries or a single high cap 18650. Feed it with anAW 18650 rechargeable battery and it will blast out its 225 lumens for over 2 hours. No more runtime issues for MTB, very high output and reasonable cost compared to dedicated bike lights. The TK11 also features a finned head for increased cooling efficiency during prolonged use.
